Doc's Bike Bike #6
1979 Harley Sportster
It's now 1985 (I think) and I'm in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
A customer went to buy a new Ford Bronco from the local Ford dealer and wanted to trade in a used
Harley. The dealership didn't want the bike after they made the deal with the customer so I bought
the Harley from them for the $1,000. It was a 1979 Harley Sportster and just like new.

Again I was "IN LOVE." As you can see it had a great seat for both rider and passenger. I went on
lots of SHORT rides with my Harley but again I had the same problem with this bike as I had with my
Suzuki (which I still had). It VIBRATED like mad at highway speeds and every part of my body went
NUMB after about an hour. But I still loved it. Especially the sound and the torque! I delighted in drag
racing Corvettes!
It vibrated so bad that when I would get going fast on my Harley (about 100+) you couldn't see the
tach or speedometer any longer. Everything would just go FUZZY! But what a thrill!
Winter came along one year (and again being a fare weather rider) I decided to get a really nice car
for a change. I found a guy in Albuquerque who owned a 1975 Mercedes 450 SL Sport Roadster and
he was willing to take my Harley in as part trade. I rode the Harley to Albuquerque and traded for the Mercedes.
What a mistake that was! Oh it was nice and road great. Fast too, but a mechanics nightmare when it
came to maintenance. It spent more time in the shop than most Harley's. Ha! (Of course My Harley
was an exception, NEVER in the shop.)
Anyway. Time passed and I TRADED the Mercedes for my NEXT bike!
