Doc's Bike #5

Suzuki 1982 GS650

Again MANY years went by before I got another motorcycle. Kids, businesses, etc! But I did have

lots of three wheelers and off road toys of a WIDE variety since I lived in Las Cruces, New Mexico

with lots of desert nearby. I spent several years riding dirt bikes, which you can see by going here

if you like my dirt bikes.

Finally about 1982, I was a single guy again and wanted some excitement and something to do. A

friend I had been riding dirt bikes with owned a local Suzuki motorcycle dealership. I had bought

dirt bikes and 3-wheelers from him and one day while on a brief visit he offered a new Suzuki to me

to go for a little ride.

It had been years since I had ridden on pavement and what a thrill!  I could actually open up the

throttle and let it rip! I came back to his store and took a look around his showroom. I rode several

other bikes that day. I was "hooked again"! I couldn't get it off my mind. A couple days later I was

the proud owner of a new Suzuki 1982 GS650.

(Since I couldn't find an actual photo of my bike, a kind fella named Ron Hurd

offered me this photo to use. It is just like the bike I had, even the same color.)

-Thanks Ron

This was my first NEW bike and it was great. Everything worked and it started every time, with just

the push of a button! No more KICK starts for me.

It was this bike that really allowed me to know the meaning of cruising the highways and seeing the

country. I started riding with some friends ever chance we got and was hardly ever home on the

weekends. I added a fairing, cruise lock down, better grips, side bags and anything else I could think

of to make it ME! Even though it was only a 650 it was dressed like a real highway road bike and I

truly enjoyed it.

I kept that Suzuki for several years and literally rode the wheels off it. I can't remember exactly how

many miles I put on it but it was LOTS of miles! I saw the entire state of New Mexico, Texas, Arizona,

Colorado and even rode it to Oklahoma a few times. LOTS of miles.

It was then I realized WHY all the other bikes on the highways were a lot bigger than mine. My BUTT

was sore all the time and my hands and feet stayed NUMB!  Finally, I decided it was time to go BIGGER.
