Doc's Bike #3
1960 Honda Cub 90 c.c.

I finally learn to ride!
It's 1964, and I'm in the Air Force (now age 20) stationed on the island of Okinawa at Kadena A.F. base.
Being curious about the island and wanting to see everything I can, a motorcycle was the most logical
answer. Besides, it was cheap transportation for a broke airman.
I bought my first Honda. It was a 1960 -90 c.c. Honda Cub and I loved it. That little bike took me 11,000
miles on an island that was only 64 miles long and 11 miles wide, at the widest point. I rode the wheels
off it and enjoyed every mile.
If you've never been in the service or stationed on an island, you may not appreciate the full meaning
of "being bored!" To occupy my time, especially during the typhoons, when confined to your room in
the barracks, I learned everything there was to know about a 90 c.c. motorcycle. I took that little bike
apart a thousand times, even down to the piston rings, just to see what they looked like!
It was fire-engine Red and when I got done with it, it had lots of chrome too. I even had my mother send
me 2 yards of Red & White metalflake naughahide to re-upholster the seat with. (Remember, this was
1964 and it was really stuff back then.) Take a close look at the seat in the photo above.
Of course I had to make it sound better, being a real hot-rodder. So I grafted a set of Honda 350 Scrambler
dual side pipes into the one small pipe and ran them along the side just like a big bike. (Take a close look
at the enlarged photo of the picture above to see the pipes.) WOW....what a sound! I had the coolest little
bike on the island and of course after a few engine rebuilds, it ran pretty good too.
