NOS

Super Powershot Nitros Oxide System

Everyone (well almost everyone) wants to GO FAST once in awhile. Right?

Since I have never had a Nitros system before, I thought it was about time. SO!

I ordered this Super Powershot NOS system, which is adjustable from 100 to 150 H.P.

for that added "kick in the butt" feeling.

I figured what the heck. No one can sit in the back seat anyway, since Shelby doesn't have

one, SO. That would be the perfect place to mount a NOS tank. Right?

Total cost (ordered from SUMMIT Racing on line catalog, delivered to me) $500.80

Here is the NOS plate being installed under the carburetor

under the car, along with the battery cable (which is inside a heater hose for insulation

and added safety). Click to see an enlargement if you like.

Then here are all the EXTRA items it takes to make it all work!

I truly can't thank all the guys on VMF Vintage Mustang Forum enough for all their help.

Being new to NOS I learned SO MUCH just by posting a question. Without their comments,

hints and suggestions I might have unintentionally blown the whole thing up. They suggested

I get a WINDOWS switch and a THROTTLE switch. Then later someone suggested a

few other safety items, as you can see my shopping list kept growing. The guys from VMF

just kept spending my money everytime I got a new reply. I bet I called and made 5 different

orders to get all this stuff straight. There was a lot more to this Nitros stuff than first meets

the eye. But I was already committed and couldn't stop now. I wanted to do it right the

first time!

NOS Pressure Gauge #NOS-15910

Window RPM Switch            Low RPM proms      High RPM proms

     $76.99                         $21.69                     $21.69

The WINDOWS switch is tied to the solenoids for the NS system and only allows it

to be on and OPEN between a certain RPM range. In other words, it can be set to open

ABOVE let's say 3,000 RPM and set to shut off when it reaches a point just below

your SHIFT point, of let's say 5,000 RPM. So you would set the NOS to shut off

at about 4,800 RPM, just in case you miss a shift. After your back in gear again,

then the system comes back on again. This switch is made by MSD and doesn't come

with any RPM pills to plug into it, so they have to be ordered separately. The Windows

switch with RPM module plug-in-proms cost about $125.00 total for all of it. Because

the people at Summit are more knowledgeable than those I've spoke with at Jeg's I

ordered these items from Summit.

 Blow-off valve             Blow down tube

      $19.95                       $19.95

I had first ordered a Blow-Off valve which is attached to the NOS bottle itself, along with

the Blow Down tube. This is a safety feature that's not only a good idea but is also required

by NHRA on any NOS bottles installed inside the passenger compartment, which mine will

be. The Blow down tube must exit outside the car. But after I received the parts I realized

Summit had sent me the wrong Pop-Off valve and it wouldn't attach to my bottle. Plus the

Blow down tube was going to be too short for exiting outside my passenger compartment.

So back I went to reorder the correct items. I tried to find them on line without success.

So I called Jeg's (to add these items to a previous order I had already made that day).

The NEW Racer's Pop-Off valve #16166 was another $24.99 and then I ordered 3' of

braided line and another adapter fitting, to attach to the valve, to exit it from inside my Shelby.

See the NEW valve here:

Now I have an unusable Pop-Off valve and Blow-down tube! I hate it when that happens.

These items are FOR SALE.

The THROTTLE switch is used to turn the system ON and OFF as well. It turns the system

ON ONLY when the throttle is wide open. This prevents the system from activating

unless you are really serious about it. Used in conjunction with the COVERED Trigger

Switch, this THROTTLE switch should also prevent the system from being accidentally

activated by the inside switch when it is turned on, unless under full throttle. This switch

was a LOT cheaper only about $11.00 from either Jeg's or Summit.

Throttle Switch        Covered Trigger switch    Low Fuel Pressure Switch

      $10.95                            $25.95                         $35.95

(the Throttle switch as seen below mounted below the throttle linkage)

The Fuel Pressure switch/valve is also a safety item. If the fuel pressure drops below

the pressure required to operate the NOS system, it shuts down the NOS completely.

They say there is nothing worse than running out of gas when your pumping Nitros

into your system. It don't like it! And may go BOOM!

This photo shows the above fuel pressure gauge installed with the above Low Fuel

Pressure emergency cut off switch, and the fuel pressure regulator all installed, as well

as a manual oil pressure gauge (there is another set of gauges inside the passenger

compartment as well).

The Trigger Switch for activating the Nitros system had to be put somewhere

and I deliberated about where and how. I ended up going to Radio Shack and

purchasing a "project box" for a couple bucks along with an LED Green lite to

indicate when it is "HOT" or GREEN for GO!

Interior Gauges:

Autometer Ultra-Lite Fuel Pressure with Isolator (so it can be mounted inside the car)

Part # 105-4413 from Jeg's (on-line) $106.90

The above photo shows the fuel pressure Isolator installed in the car (the under hood part).

The gauge itself naturally is installed in the Shelby gauge pod on top of

the dash itself. Along with the matching....

Autometer Ultra-Lite Electric 10,000 RPM TACH Part #105-4497(on-line)$ 88.99

Here are the NEW gauges installed:

NOW that I had all this really COOL NOS stuff, they told me my Mallory ignition probably

isn't HOT ENOUGH! It takes a LOT of spark to ignite all that Nitros. OK you guys,

when is it going to stop. Ha! I am already running one of the finest distributors made, the

Mallory Comp 9000, yet it still needs more fire! They say!

So back on line I went and ordered a new CRANE HI-6 ignition system with Rev Limiter

and their matching LX92 Coil kit for another $218.97. This should be able to knock down

Ponderosa Pines with each spark.

After all this I just had to coordinate everything and added a set of Jacobs 8.5 mm

High Performance "BLUE" ignition wires, which I ordered from Summit Racing

for $78.34 delivered to my door. Plus some other miscellaneous color coordinating

items, battery cables, battery shut off switch and etc. Shown here:

My Shelby may not be the fastest car in Phoenix but I can at least make it look good! Right?

(2) Days later!

Now I find out that I need just one more piece. Ha! That's right, a Timing Retard

Control switch.

This simple looking little switch is another $120. It mounts inside the cab so you

can retard the timing prior to using the Nitros. I'm told the timing should be retarded

by 2 degree for each 50 h.p. of NOS used +2 degrees for safety. Therefore, if I use

a 100 h.p. shot of Nitros and the timing is normally 14 degrees advanced, then

the timing should be retarded to about 8 degrees advanced.

The photo below shows my NITROS wiring system, the Window Switch, the new

Crane HI-6 ignition system and Crane coil (53,000 Volts), and the NOS box below

the ignition box houses 50 wires just for the Timing Retard System (described below).

If you look close under the big blue radiator hose you can barely see the relay switches

for the new Tri-Bar halogen headlights, as well as another relay for the SPAL fan.

The entire system is individually fused as well.

After the NOS trigger box plate was complete, it was ready to install in Shelby.

But where?

I decided to make a special aluminum mounting plate, to attach it in front of the

floor shifter, for easy "emergency" shut off. Here is the new bracket I fabricated

to hold the Trigger Switch and Timing Retard Control (described below).

OK, I think I have everything now. Maybe! Well not quite. After all this stuff

now I needed a "line lock" so I can do those really cool "burn-outs". Right? SO...
