PROJECT INITIATION
ABOUT US | PROJECTS | REGISTRATION | CONSTITUTION

Members,

We feel it is time to start getting some society projects underway. Based on suggestions we have been given, we have identified seven priority areas that we believe could be best addressed through the formation of committees. The following is a list of these committees and a description of what they will be doing. If you feel that you would be interested in joining a specific committee, please let us know, and we do need your help! Also, if you are interested in chairing a committee that does not already have a chair, let us know that as well. These committees will be able to identify their own goals and projects and we look forward to getting started. Please try to decide which committee would be best served by your talents. If you wish, you may serve on more than one committee.

Thanks!

Co-Founders of the Eastland Memorial Society

  MEMORIALS COMMITTEE

This committee will look at getting a more prominent memorial placed at the disaster site in the city of Chicago. This committee will also want to find ways to observe the anniversary of the disaster such as getting churches to recognize the victims in prayers, getting the City of Chicago to put their city flags at half mast on the anniversary, etc.
Chair: Shawn Ford

  POSTAL STAMP COMMITTEE

This committee will try to convince the US Postal Service to issue a commemorative stamp on the 100th anniversary of the disaster. The work will involve writing a proposal for the Postal Service and lobbying US congresspersons to support our efforts.
Chair: Tom Ziolkowski

CORRECTING OMISSIONS FROM REFERENCE MATERIALS COMMITTEE

This committee will find reference books, articles, databases, etc. that have made a glaring omission in leaving out any information or reference to the Eastland disaster, and writing to the publishers or authors and getting them to add it in to future printings/editions of their publication.
Chair: M. J. Bonevelle

  100th ANNIVERSARY COMMITTEE

This committee will be responsible for starting to plan the 100th anniversary observance in the City of Chicago. This committee will have 16 years to come up with ideas for all sorts of types of observances and planning ways to make this observance noticed by media.
Chair: Tracey Ziolkowski

  INFORMATION ARCHIVE/WEBSITE COMMITTEE

This committee will be compiling factual information, lists of references, first-person sources, etc. This committee will also discuss changes and improvements for the society's website.
Chair: Karl Sup

  ORAL HISTORIES COMMITTEE

This committee will contact descendants of survivors, victims, rescuers, and anyone else involved in the disaster and compile written records of the oral histories that have been passed down. It is important for us to collect this information before it passes through more generations.
Chair: Brian Dimler

RECOGNITION OF DISASTER BY PRINT AND MASS MEDIA COMMITTEE

This committee will contact newspapers and television to make sure that the disaster is not forgotten. One of our goals as an organization is to increase public awareness of the disater. An excellent way to do this is to get newspapers, magazines, and television to use it as a subject and to observe the anniversary of the disaster each year.
Chair: Jeanne-Marie Zajdel
