Henna Tattooing by Pat Jackson
Henna Tattooing:
Body tint, or "Mehandi", is an ancient tradition from India, that uses Natural Henna, a plant-diverged dye, (similar to henna hair coloring), that temporarily and harmlessly stains the skin with designs that are painted on. It is often used for special occasions such as weddings, rites of passage, and tints on a beautiful reddish-orange color.
The art of Henna painting (Mehandi), is a 5,000 year old tradition in areas including The Middle East, India, Africa, and Morocco.
The reddish color of the henna is associated with energy, health and quickness, both in the sense of swiftness and heightened sensitivity. Even if Mehandi has evolved into a purely decorative art form, it’s origin stems from primitive body markings. Henna has the triple merit of being medicinally helpful, having a beautiful color, and being religiously desirable as a means of purification or protection from evil influences. The length of the Mehandi sitting, ranges from 30 minutes for a simple design to several hours for a large boby area with an intricate design.
Today the art of Henna-body tinting today, is proving to be a wonderful alternative to permanent tattooing, because the beautiful color lasts from 1 to 3 weeks (depending on the skin type, proper care, climate, etc.), then slowly fades as the skin naturally exfoliates.
