Mrs. Melissa "Beamie" Hudgins, 79, daughter of the late Mr. Powell Scott a nd Mrs. Louise Gaddie Scott, was born March 9, 1895, in Taylor County a nd departed this life at 8:10 p.m. Monday, July 29, 1974, at the Methodi st Hospital in Louisville. She had made a profession of faith in Christ a nd was a member of the Taylor Chapel Methodist Church at the time of her d eath. She united in marriage to Mr. Sollie Hudgins, May 5, 1918, and he pr eceded her in death May 4, 1963. To this union were born one son and one d aughter: Linzy Hudgins and Mrs. Elam Creason, both of Louisville. Also sur viving are two sisters: Mrs. Henrietta Shaw, Summersville, and Mrs. Ella H udgins, Magnolia; one brother: Alvin Scott, Summersville; one granddaughte r: Mrs. Lowayne Hodge, Louisville; three great-grandchildren: Dana Lynn, J ames Patrick, and Stacy Marie Hodge, all of Louisville. The remains we re at the Cowherd & Parrott Funeral Home where funeral services were condu cted at 10 a.m. (CDT) Thursday, August 1, with burial in the Aetna Grove C emetery. Revs. Otis Skaggs and Ferreill Gardner officiated. Pallbearers: C hess Hall, David Marcum, Carl Shaw, Owen Hodge, Kenneth Murphay, and Ray W right.

Dear Brother & Sister
I seat myself this evening to write you a few lines to inform you that a part of us
are yet alive on the land among the living and are in the enjoyment of com mon
health at the present time hoping these few lines may find you with a ll in good
health. I received (sic) your letter a few days since dated the fir st of this month.
Was glad to learn that you was (sic) yet alive. I had almost come to the
conclusion that you was dead or in the Southern army, not having heard fro m
you since this rebellion broke out; I wrote you a letter last Spring. B ut received
no answer. Have received two or from E. B. Hunt and he said could not hea r
from you, the last I heard from Lige he was Captain of a Calvalry compa ny in the
State service.
As I said apart of us are yet alive. Death has visited our little fami ly and swept
from us some of our nearest relatives, even a dear Mother and Aunt, on t he 29th
of Oct Mother departed this life. She was confined to her bed about fo ur weeks
with numonia (sic), suffering greatly all the time. She expressed a perfe ct
willingness to die all the time. Finally in her expiring moment when perf ectly in
her right mind she clasped her hands and said rejoiced that the time had c ome
that she would meet her Savior and shouted victory over death in a dying h our.
She often talked of you through the last year. She felt like you was dea d. Said
she would be glad to see you once more in this life, but as life is uncert ain and
death sure, friends are often separated to no more in this world. Old Au nt Milly
died the 24th of January lacking five days of being three months diferen ce in
their deaths. I was at the burial of Cordelia Reed this evening. These wi th
numerous of our old friends have died since I wrote to you, Old Richard Pa rrott,
Jesse Morris, Wm. Carlile, Jim Mat Rivers, John Feather Jr., John Short an d
others.
I haven’t any news of importance to write at the present time. We ha ve had
some troublesome times in Old Ky. with the Rebels through the past year, b ut
the flag of the UNION still floats victoriously over our old native Stat e. Produce
provisions and money plenty. Corn is worth 2.00 dollars per barrel; po rk 4 cts
per pound; wheat 75 to 100 per bu stock low.

Marion County, Ky. Feb. 28th, 1863
Dear Brother & Sister
I seat myself this evening to write you a few lines to inform you that a part of us
are yet alive on the land among the living and are in the enjoyment of com mon
health at the present time hoping these few lines may find you with a ll in good
health. I received (sic) your letter a few days since dated the fir st of this month.
Was glad to learn that you was (sic) yet alive. I had almost come to the
conclusion that you was dead or in the Southern army, not having heard fro m
you since this rebellion broke out; I wrote you a letter last Spring. B ut received
no answer. Have received two or from E. B. Hunt and he said could not hea r
from you, the last I heard from Lige he was Captain of a Calvalry compa ny in the
State service.
As I said apart of us are yet alive. Death has visited our little fami ly and swept
from us some of our nearest relatives, even a dear Mother and Aunt, on t he 29th
of Oct Mother departed this life. She was confined to her bed about fo ur weeks
with numonia (sic), suffering greatly all the time. She expressed a perfe ct
willingness to die all the time. Finally in her expiring moment when perf ectly in
her right mind she clasped her hands and said rejoiced that the time had c ome
that she would meet her Savior and shouted victory over death in a dying h our.
She often talked of you through the last year. She felt like you was dea d. Said
she would be glad to see you once more in this life, but as life is uncert ain and
death sure, friends are often separated to no more in this world. Old Au nt Milly
died the 24th of January lacking five days of being three months diferen ce in
their deaths. I was at the burial of Cordelia Reed this evening. These wi th
numerous of our old friends have died since I wrote to you, Old Richard Pa rrott,
Jesse Morris, Wm. Carlile, Jim Mat Rivers, John Feather Jr., John Short an d
others.
I haven’t any news of importance to write at the present time. We ha ve had
some troublesome times in Old Ky. with the Rebels through the past year, b ut
the flag of the UNION still floats victoriously over our old native Stat e. Produce
provisions and money plenty. Corn is worth 2.00 dollars per barrel; po rk 4 cts
per pound; wheat 75 to 100 per bu stock low.
