General Notes (Husband)
William Warren's Revolutionary War Pension Record #W. 3056.
State of Kentucky. Green County. On this 20 day of October 1834 personal ly appeared
in open court before the Justices of the Green County court now sitting Wi lliam Warren,
a resident of the county and state aforesaid, aged 73 years, who being fir st duly sworn
according to law soth on his oath make the following Declaration in ors er to attain the
benefit of the act of congress passed June 7th 1832 that he entered the se rvice of the
United States in the District of 96 State of South Carolina; he does not r ecollect the date
with certainly but he thinks it was in the latter part of the year 17 76 or first of the year
1777; he entered the service as a substitute for his Father Hugh Warren un der the
command of Captain Jeremiah Doty who was under command of col. Thoma s, he marched
against the Indians to Fort Seneca on the river Savannah a distan ce of 80 or 90 miles
from his place of residence, and was there stationed at said fort someweek s; he served
as a substitute and as a private soldier in the malitia under the office rs aforesaid 6 weeks
and was then verbally discharged and returned home. That a short time af ter the tour last
named he thinks in the early part of the year 1777 he was drafted to rema in in service 3
months if his services should be do long required, he served under Capt. J eremiah Doty,
William Waughford was Lieutenant and these officers were under comma nd of Col.
Thomas, he marched against the Indians into the State of Georgia near t he Ocone river a
distance of 150 miles or more from his residence that he served 8 wee ks to the best of his
recollection, and his services being no longer required he was discharg ed by Col. Thomas
and returned home, he does not recollect, however, that he has any writt en discharge, if he
had it has long since been lost. That he was again called on to serve a t our against the
Indians he thinks in the year 1777, that he entered into service under Cap tain Doty who was
commanded by Col. Thomas and marched on the Indian line (as it was then ca lled) in South
Carolina and was there stationed, and after he had served 4 weeks he was v erbally
discharged and returned home. That in the year 1778, though of the da te he cannot speak
with certainty, he entered into service as a volunteer and private soldi er in the malitia under
the command of Captain Dennis Tramell who he thinks was commanded by Co l. Roebuck,
that during this year he kept himself in readiness and served under the or ders of Captain
Tramell at all times when called upon, that he marched under the comma nd of said captain
against the Torries and British a number of short tours, that all his serv ice under Captain
Tramell was rendered in the District of '96 on the waters of Pacolet and S aluda Rivers,
sometimes marching through the country lying near the Fort of 96, th at he continued in
service as aforesaid under the Captain aforesaid he thinks a least 12 mont hs, though
during this 12 months he was not constantly in actual service, but serv ed a number of short
tours from time to time whenever called on by his captain: and owing to t he nature of his
service being as it was in a number of short tours, and from loss of memor y, it is not now
possible for him to tell how long he was in actual service under said capt ain nor will his
recollections now enable him to speak of the different tours and describ ed them separately,
or in any other way more fully than he has done above. That he again volu nteered and
entered the service as a private soldier in the militia under the comma nd of Captain
Jeremiah Dickson. Anthony Cotter was Lieutenant of the company, and John R oebuck was
the Colonel, he marched against the Torries and British through the count ry lying between
his residence and the town of 96, during this tour he was in a short engag ement with the
enemy under the command of a Tory by the name of Cunningham, the engageme nt was
short and no lives were lost. He served under the officers aforesaid duri ng the tour of 3
weeks and returned to his residence. That he was again drafted and enter ed into service
under Captain Cotter and Col. Roebuck who were under the command of Maj or John Ford,
he marched under the officers aforesaid to reinforce Gen. Green who was th en near
Charleston with his army, that they joined Gen. Greens army a short distan ce from a
fortification called a blockhouse, which was then in possession of the ene my that the
officers under whom he served were under the command of General Pickins a nd were
stationed a short distance perhaps half a mile from General Greens encampm ent, his
impression is that he was drafted this tour to serve 2 or 3 months, but h is services was
not that long required and he served to the best of his recollection 8 wee ks and was then
verbally discharged and returned home. That from age and great loss of mem ory he is
unable to state with any degree of certainty the dates of the three tou rs of service last
above set forth, but his best recollection is that the 3 tours of servi ce last named were
rendered between the year 1778 and the year 1782, the dates of the other t ours of may not
be correct, they are however stated to the best of his recollection and wi th as much certainty
as his memory will now enable him to speak. That all his service was rende red as a private
soldier in the militia that he has no record of his age now in his possio n, but from his best
information, he was born in October in the year 1761 in the State of Virgi nia, that he moved
from Virginia to South Carolina when he was quite a small Boy, and when ca lled into service
his residence was in the District of 96 South Carolina, he moved from Sou th Carolina to
Kentucky about 36 years since, and he now lives in Green County Kentuck y, that from the
nature of his services he was acquainted with few officers except those ab ove named, he
does not recollect that he ever received a written discharge, if he d id it has long since been
lost, that some months since he in conjunction with his Brother Hugh Warr en procured the
affidavit of Captain Dennis Tramell in proof of their services, that sa id Trammell’s testimony
was in relation to the services both of his Brother Hugh Warren and himsel f, and that he then
intended sending on his claim at the same time with his Brother, but was s ick and unable to
attend court when his Brother made out his Declaration, he refers the W ar Department to the
affidavit of Captain Tramell in proof of his services, which affidavit wi ll be found with papers
heretofore forwarded in support of the claim of his brother Hugh Warren, t hat said Tramell
lives in the State of Tennessee and cannot retake his affidavit without co nsiderable expense
and delay, that he has relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or a nnuity except the
present and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agen cy of any State,
sworn and subscribed the day and year first above written.

General Notes for Child Margaret 'Polly' Mary Warren
Joseph Spelse Senior listed in the 1850 Greene County, Indiana Federal cen sus, living
with son Joseph Spelse Junior. Joseph listed his place of birth as Sou th Carolina.
Polly listed her place of birth as Georgia. Polly was 72, placing her bir th at abt 1778.
Joseph listed his age 83, placing his birth at about 1767.
General Notes for Child Hardin Warren
Died during the Civil War, while all the men were away. He was
buried by the women in the corner of the garden at one of the
Warren homeplaces on Little Piney Creek, below Garbor.
Either from restlessness or from a burning pioneer spirit, some of the
Warrens decided to move on to Indiana in the 1820's, (Indiana became
a state in 1816). The names of the heads of the families that moved
include *Hardin, Fredrick, and William, who were all sons of William
mentioned above. The Johnsons and Pelts who became allied by
marriage accompanied these Warrens on their trek. The county to
which they moved was also named Green County. It was heavily
forested and mountainous terrain, similar to the land they-farmed
back in Kentucky. Hardin owned some 40 acres and Fredrick, his
brother owned 80 acres. While in Indiana *James Warren, *Hardin's
son was indicted for larceny. They farmed their homesteads for
almost ten years. Suddenly, in the 1840 census records show that
Hardin Warren and his family moved to Madison County, Illinois.
According to deeds that Young Hardin and his mother Lydia were in
Greene County Indiana selling their land to Isham Johnson, Lydia's
relative, for a sum of $50 for 40 acres. Several offshoots of the
family remained behind. The reason he left for Illinois and then
for Arkansas is not known. Hardin left for Arkansas between the
years 1840-41. Tradition has it that the migration lasted four years
which included a year hauling timber in Missouri. But it is possible
that some of the Warren's reached Arkansas around 1842 or 43.
They also may have ran a freight line from South Bend. Indiana to
Jefferson City, Missouri. The line used wagons that were pulled by
ox teams and meat skins were used to grease the wagons thimbles.
When Hardin reached Arkansas they built their homestead in the
Ozark Mountains some 20 miles north of Clarksville in Johnson
County. They made their living by farming and made what they
needed. For items that could not be made they were bought or
traded for. Til this day Hardin's descendants live in the Johnson
County area to this day.
General Notes for Child Frederick 'Ben' 'Fed' Warren
Voice call from Stephen Warren, descendant of Frederick Warren
states that Frederick Warren was listed as "Ben" on the death
certificate of son Jacob Warren.
Place of Birth was considered Boyle county, according to Marriage
Listing of Frederick's son, Dotson Warren and wife Parthena Skaggs.
This was written in the 1860's, at which time Boyle county was in
existence. However, when Frederick was born, this would have
been Lincoln County or Mercer County, as Boyle County was created
in 1842.
I find a Frederick Warren in the 1830 Greene County, Indiana census.
The info from the census indicates that this may be our Frederick.
1 white male between 30 and 40. Frederick's age was 37 (born 1793)
We would then know that his wife was younger, between 20 and 30.
Also listed is at least 6 others in his family, most likely his
children.
Either from restlessness or from a burning pioneer spirit, some of the War rens decided to move on to Indiana in the
1820's, (Indiana became a state in 1816). The names of the heads of the fa milies that moved include *Hardin, Fredrick,

these Warrens on their trek. The county to which they moved was also nam ed Greene County. It was heavily forested
and mountainous terrain, similar to the land they-farmed back in Kentuck y. Hardin owned some 40 acres and Fredrick,
his brother owned 80 acres.

General Notes (Husband)
A February 2007 DNA test has placed our Warrens back to the Poynton, Chesh ire County, England
Warren family. We match DNA with the Maryland Humphrey Warren famil y. We do not match DNA
with the Rapphannock County, Virginia Warren family, whom we previously th ought we were directly
related to.
Hugh Warren-1729 is listed on the Frederick County, Virginia tax listin gs for 1759, probably after turning 21.
Preliminary work by Holland Warren and message board traffic from Norma Ki rchhofer
place Hugh Warren and wife Margaret in Frederick County, VA in the 1750' s. [Great job
to you both]. Hopefully on my next trip to SLC for my own satisfaction, I 'll ensure our
Warren branch has some paper records to back up this new info.
I still need to verify Norma's Genforum message with followup resear ch in Salt Lake City.
This makes sense to me; based on my research about 15 years ago when I tri ed to tie
Hugh Warren (ca 1725) back to the Humphrey Warren branch unsuccesfully. Re cent
DNA research ties our Hugh Warren branch directly back to the Poynton Warr ens.

land located on both sides of the Tygar River.
The Kentucky Warrens became acquainted with a wealthy landowner, Nathani el Owens. He owned some 8,000 acres in northern Green County and built a G eorgian brick home and called it Lashfield. It was located 10 miles nor th of Greensburg. The Warren families moved on and near the 8,000 acres a nd farmed the land. A notable story about the Owens family should be tol d. Nathaniel had a beautiful young daughter. She was courted by many you ng and eligible men, including one man who would be president. Abe Linco ln lived in a nearby settlement, and apparently made trips to see Miss Owe ns. During one dinner party, Lincoln noticed a small, dead mouse in the pu dding. He did not wish for his hostess to be embarrassed. He carefully rem oved the mouse from the serving dish and ate what was on his plate.
UPCOUNTRY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
The areas between the Broad River and Saluda River at that time in 1775 we re under the command of Col. Thomas Fletchall, who would later become a st aunch Loyalist to Britain. He lived on the lower Fair Forest River, abo ut six miles from present Union, South Carolina. The people below the up per portions were not as favorable to the American cause and from these pe ople came many of the tories who would side and fight with the Briti sh in the coming war. One asks why were the people in the upper portio ns of the State more favorable to the cause of freedom. In "The Histo ry of Spartanburg County", Dr. Landrum states: "...the extreme up-count ry of South Carolina, was settled by emigrants who advanced from nor th to south and in front of the eastern settlers. These settlements did n ot begin until after the ceding of said territory by the Cherokee India ns under Governor Glen .... As far back as 1736, settlements from the seac oast had progressed westward only about eighty or ninety miles. In 1755 t he population of the territory afterwards formed into the county of Sparta nburg, including Colonel Clarke the first settler of the Pacolet, did n ot consist of more than eight or ten Scotch-Irish families from Pennsylvan ia....who settled on the forks of the Tygers. Soon however, emigration be gan to pour in from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, and other colonie s, as well as from the old countries, and the country began to be rapid ly be settled up.....Many of these settlers of the up-country were of Engl ish extraction and dissenters from the Established Church of the mother co untry. These were mostly immigrants from Virginia." So at the beginni ng of the Revolution, the two areas of South Carolina; the one having sett led from over the mountains to the North and the other from the coast, h ad not really met or commingled. This explains why the people of the upp er regions of Carolina were of a different mold and more willing to ta ke up the American cause.
