General Notes (Husband)
Have a copy of both William and Hugh Jr's Revolutionary War Pension
Records. William, in Particular, has a lot of Information, as far as Fami ly
information. Hugh Jr's Date of Birth, and State of Birth are given. It no tes
that Hugh Jr. moved at an early age to South Carolina. He fought in the
battle of cowpens. His father and him served at the same time for a
mounted unit in the War.
Hugh Sr. worked land in Buck Creek, near Pacelot in the early 1770's.
Hugh Jr's war record stated he lived 12 miles from Woffords Iron Works
about a mile from the Pacelot River.
Census and Tax lists:

Hugh Warren on 1800 Green County, Kentucky tax listings.
Hugh Warren on 1810 Green County, Kentucky federal census.
Hugh Warren not found on 1820 Kentucky or Indiana census.
There is a H. Warren listed in 1820 and 1824 in Richmond
County, Georgia federal and state census. Need to check on
this though.
Hugh Warren on 1830 Green County, Kentucky federal census.
Hugh Warren listed with youngest son, Nathan Warren, on 1840
Green County, Kentucky federal census, his age between 70-80
years of age.
Hugh Warren's will written and probated in 1845, Green County, Kentucky.
Have excerpt of Will, in which he names son Nathan and daughter
Polly Warren specifically. Other children are spoken of, but no
names are given. Hugh had at least 3 children counting my ancestor
Avery, and in looking at the census data, I believe a William Warren,
born in 1800 to be of Hugh Jr's lineage, although not proven yet.

General Notes (Husband)
Hugh placed here only as a place holder. DNA test match with Humphrey Warr en's family lineage.
Humphrey Warren and Margery Cage had at least one unknown child at the ti me that Humphrey
Warren wrote his will in 1689. This child was later found to be Humphr ey in 1694 amendment to will.
Thomas Warren and Jane his wife had a similar situation when he drafted h is will in 1708, with Jane
carrying a child. Hugh Warren is placed here as a probability.
We know that Hugh Warren was in Prince Georges county until at least 17 32 by the
following 2 recorded entries:
Entry 1:
Santelo Dyer (Dier) left a will that was written 10 April 1732 in Prince G eorges County, Maryland
It was probated on 28 June 1732.
The appraisers were Thomas Hilleary and Thomas Williams.
Creditors were listed as John Child and John Hodskon.
There were no Next of Kin "In Maryland" noted.
The administrator and Executor of this will was Hugh Waring.

Charles Buck having made oath that he attended thirty four days as an evid ence for Margaret Warren in the suit on
ejectment brought by Thomas Chester against her. On his motion is order ed that Margaret Warren pay him eight
hundered & fifty pounds of tobacco for the same according to law.
A few items to note about these entries:
It appears that Margaret Warren and her children continued to work la nd as tobacco farmers in Frederick County, Virginia
after the early death of the elder Hugh Warren. The eldest 3 children wou ld have been able to help keep the farm operating
in the early years. My own Warren lineage (Hugh-1694 , Hugh-1729, Hugh-176 4, Avery-1791, Felix-1820 carried the trade of
tobacco farming to the 96th district of South Carolina and later to Gre en and Taylor counties in Kentucky.
In typical Warren fashion (my branch), the Warrens may not have moved an i nch from the orginal Charles County,
Maryland location until they moved to Frederick County, Virginia between 1 733-1744 as Prince Georges County,
Maryland was created in part from Charles County in 1695.
General Notes for Child Hugh Warren
A February 2007 DNA test has placed our Warrens back to the Poynton, Chesh ire County, England
Warren family. We match DNA with the Maryland Humphrey Warren famil y. We do not match DNA
with the Rapphannock County, Virginia Warren family, whom we previously th ought we were directly
related to.
Hugh Warren-1729 is listed on the Frederick County, Virginia tax listin gs for 1759, probably after turning 21.
Preliminary work by Holland Warren and message board traffic from Norma Ki rchhofer
place Hugh Warren and wife Margaret in Frederick County, VA in the 1750' s. [Great job
to you both]. Hopefully on my next trip to SLC for my own satisfaction, I 'll ensure our
Warren branch has some paper records to back up this new info.
I still need to verify Norma's Genforum message with followup resear ch in Salt Lake City.
This makes sense to me; based on my research about 15 years ago when I tri ed to tie
Hugh Warren (ca 1725) back to the Humphrey Warren branch unsuccesfully. Re cent
DNA research ties our Hugh Warren branch directly back to the Poynton Warr ens.

present day SC counties:
Spartanburg, Cherokee, York, Lancaster, Greenville, Laurens, Union, Newber ry, Chester.
Hugh Warren was in South Carolina by 1770, noted by land patents shown bel ow. The land was

relationship to Thomas Warren to whom Hugh Warren sold the land to. It w as once thought this
might be Thomas Hackley Warren; but this is now in question, since the re is no direct relationship
to the Hackley Warren family through DNA testing.

land located on both sides of the Tygar River.
The Kentucky Warrens became acquainted with a wealthy landowner, Nathani el Owens. He owned some 8,000 acres in northern Green County and built a G eorgian brick home and called it Lashfield. It was located 10 miles nor th of Greensburg. The Warren families moved on and near the 8,000 acres a nd farmed the land. A notable story about the Owens family should be tol d. Nathaniel had a beautiful young daughter. She was courted by many you ng and eligible men, including one man who would be president. Abe Linco ln lived in a nearby settlement, and apparently made trips to see Miss Owe ns. During one dinner party, Lincoln noticed a small, dead mouse in the pu dding. He did not wish for his hostess to be embarrassed. He carefully rem oved the mouse from the serving dish and ate what was on his plate.
UPCOUNTRY OF SOUTH CAROLINA
The areas between the Broad River and Saluda River at that time in 1775 we re under the command of Col. Thomas Fletchall, who would later become a st aunch Loyalist to Britain. He lived on the lower Fair Forest River, abo ut six miles from present Union, South Carolina. The people below the up per portions were not as favorable to the American cause and from these pe ople came many of the tories who would side and fight with the Briti sh in the coming war. One asks why were the people in the upper portio ns of the State more favorable to the cause of freedom. In "The Histo ry of Spartanburg County", Dr. Landrum states: "...the extreme up-count ry of South Carolina, was settled by emigrants who advanced from nor th to south and in front of the eastern settlers. These settlements did n ot begin until after the ceding of said territory by the Cherokee India ns under Governor Glen .... As far back as 1736, settlements from the seac oast had progressed westward only about eighty or ninety miles. In 1755 t he population of the territory afterwards formed into the county of Sparta nburg, including Colonel Clarke the first settler of the Pacolet, did n ot consist of more than eight or ten Scotch-Irish families from Pennsylvan ia....who settled on the forks of the Tygers. Soon however, emigration be gan to pour in from Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia, and other colonie s, as well as from the old countries, and the country began to be rapid ly be settled up.....Many of these settlers of the up-country were of Engl ish extraction and dissenters from the Established Church of the mother co untry. These were mostly immigrants from Virginia." So at the beginni ng of the Revolution, the two areas of South Carolina; the one having sett led from over the mountains to the North and the other from the coast, h ad not really met or commingled. This explains why the people of the upp er regions of Carolina were of a different mold and more willing to ta ke up the American cause.
